Colorado Springs Planting Schedule

COLORADO SPRINGS PLANTING SCHEDULE

If you’ve lived in Colorado Springs for a few years you’ve probably picked up on our fairly unpredictable weather patterns. One day we’re at a perfect 72 degree day with clear skies and picturesque views and the next we are covered with a foot of snow and it’s dropped 40 degrees in the middle of April. If you’re a gardener or you’re thinking about elevating your curb-appeal this spring with some gorgeous plants here are some tips to help your colorful garden become a success.

WHEN TO PLANT

Native Coloradans have come to understand that it’s wisest to wait until at least Mother’s Day weekend before heading out to buy those colorful flowers for your gardens. Usually the last freeze has come and gone and although you still need to keep a close eye on the weather in case of a low temperature drop and snow the temperatures quickly return to levels that are suitable for our beautiful flowerbeds.

TIP: Watch the weather

If you have planted your flowers keeping an eye on the weather each week is a great idea. In the event that s cold front moves in and we’re likely to drop to freezing temps and snow is possible you’ll want to bring any potted plants you have indoors to protect them from the elements and cover any ground plants to help them have a fighting chance. TIP: Recommended supply stores

The best local garden supply businesses are Rick’s Garden Center located on the west side off of Unitah and Phelan Gardens on Austin Bluffs. Rick’s has an incredibly knowledgeable staff and they’re incredibly helpful. Tell them about your project and they’ll recommend the best products to give you the results you’re looking for. Tell them about your soil and ask for recommendations on local organic fertilizers to keep your loved ones and pets safe.
